MONDAY, JUNE 12, 1893 History is said to repeat itself, and it is probable it will do so concerning tbe berry shipments. Last year the berry shippers rushed their products into Helena and Butte, glutted those markets, forced prices down, and put the fruit merchants there in a position to under sell the shipper here in all the outside markets. The same thing is being done this year, and unless a halt is called the results will be anything but gratifying. The union is a step in the right direction, but tbe independent shipper handicaps it. The small markets along the road must be looked up and supplied, to the end that Helena and Butte cannot con trol the market and dictate prices, or there is going to be a quick and heavy fall in values. Glacier. On account of the depression in the wool market, which is no doubt the re- suit of combined action on the part of speculators, it would, we think, be a good plan for our wool growers to also combine and ship their own wool. The leeches now in The Dalles, who have been sent out by eastern manufacturers and commission swindlers should not be allowed to purchase a pound of our wool. A threatened tariff reduction has no more to do with the price of wool than a Presbyterian assembly has to do with Christianity. Prineville News. The question whether a tomato is a fruit or vegetable has finally been de cided by the supreme court of the United States. Several years ago some im ported tomatoes came through the cus tom house in New York city, when the collector classified them as vegetables and collected dntv accordingl v. The im porter disputed this point and claimed tomatoes to be fruit and entitled to come free. The matter was taken into the court; which decided in favor of the collector's claim that the tomato is vegetable. French painters are agreed about the absurdity and bad taste of the art de partment of the fair in refusing to allow Anderson's "Woman Taken in Adul tery" to be exhibited. Artists claim that Americans have no right to screen a picture in a foreign section. The eov- ernment has not the right to interfere with the pictures in a foreign exhibit. It is a question of right and wrong and not of the morality of the work. It is stated upon the authority of the officers of the United States defense vessel Monterey that the double-tur-reted monitor will come down from Mare island navy yard on the 25th inst., and after taking fresh supplies will leave for Portland. She will go direct to Astoria, proceeding up the Columbia and Willamette rivers. The crew of the Monterey is being daily drilled, so that when the vessel reaches Portland it will be well trained. A question frequently asked is "What is a knot?'' as applied to a distance traversed by a ship. It is 6,086.7 feet. An ordinary mile is 5,280 feet, so that you can calculate how much longer a knot is than a mile. It is understood that the name of a town in Ohio Fostoria named after ex-Secretary Foster, has been changed to Bustoria, since the ex-secretary of the treasury made an assignment. The following haye obeyed every role of the school during the month and are on the weekly roll of honor: Jennie Powell, Florence Wolfe, Charlie Obnst, Oscar Anderson. Considering that the pupils from two families are motherless and do their own house work besides attending school, that one pupil rides four miles on horseback, and two little girls walk two miles to and fro every day, we think the above an excellent report. The school was not closed on memo rial day, there being no cemetery in tbe neighborhood ; but in the afternoon each pupil and the teacher prepared boquets of beautiful wild flowers and laid them on the grave of M. L. Powell's infant child in loving remembrance of each one's own departed dead. "Shall We Gather at the River" was sung, then we talked about the meaning of memo rial day, and each child went home hav ing learned the a bc of patriotism. Charlotte F. Roberts, teacher. We're not waiting for the bats and moles but for men and women who have eyes and use them, wjio have brains and reason ! There's a new world for them suffering and sickly as they are a new world created from the brain of a skill ful physician a discovery the "Golden Medical Discovery." Years ago Dr. Pierce found out that the secret of all scrofula, bronchial, throat and lung trouble lay in the be ginning at least in impure blood and the weak tone of the system ; that the way to cure these effects was to remove the cause, that human nature being the same, the same results might be looked for in nearly all cases. So confident was he that the exceptions were uncommon that he took the risk of giving the medi cine to those it didn't benefit for nothing, and the results have proved that he was right.
